Wheelchairs and Cushions are essential in enhancing patient mobility, accessibility, comfort, and care.
Giving Tuesday is a global day of generosity, encouraging us all to come together and make a positive impact in our communities. Today, we invite you to join us in celebrating the spirit of giving and make a lasting difference in the lives of patients at St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH).
This year, we’ve partnered with Dr. Hammond and his team to raise funds for new wheelchairs and cushions for STEGH’s Health Disciplines Department. This dedicated team provides essential rehabilitation and support services, helping STEGH patients on their journey to recovery.
These items can truly transform patient care—helping patients like Jim recover, regain independence, and get back to their daily routines.
Meet Jim:
Jim was a STEGH patient and brain stroke survivor. Known as a true social butterfly, Jim uses his wheelchair to visit fellow patients, many of whom have become his friends during his recovery. Jim shared that his wheelchair has been key to his independence at STEGH. Without it, he would feel isolated and alone. It also gives Jim the ability to mobilize independently to attend his daily therapy sessions, where he has made remarkable progress.
Why it matters:
Did you know that 99% of patients in Continuing Care rely on a wheelchair to move around? For many, a wheelchair is more than just a mode of transportation—it’s a lifeline to independence, dignity, and healing. But not all wheelchairs are created equal.
With your support, we can purchase new, high-quality wheelchairs and cushions that make a real difference in patient care, ensuring minimal pain and discomfort while aiding in their recovery.
Jim’s wheelchair has allowed him to regain his independence and continue his recovery. As he shared, without it, he would feel completely isolated and alone.
Jim’s journey is a powerful example of how Movement is Medicine.
As Trish Rodgers, Occupational Therapist, explains:
"It's not just moving, like walking down the hallway, it's about moving to be able to get to the bathroom, and do your daily tasks. We need seating and mobility products to be positioned well and comfortable and able to do these tasks".
The impact of your gift:
This Giving Tuesday, our goal is to raise $10,000 to purchase new wheelchairs and cushions for STEGH patients like Jim. Your gift will help provide these essential items, ensuring patients have the tools they need to live with more freedom, comfort, and confidence.
Together, we can give the gift of movement—a gift that we sometimes take for granted. For patients like Jim, movement truly is medicine.
Please give today and be part of something life-changing.
